12 Organic Chocolates

12 Organic Chocolates Green & Blacks is one of the tastiest ways to say you care for that green person on your list. This 12-pack includes classic flavours like Milk Chocolate, 70% Cacao Dark, Almond, Hazelnut & Currant and more… all Certified Organic and Fair Trade.

11 Beeswax Lipsticks OK, this great line of lipsticks actually comes in 14 colours, but we needed SOMETHING for number 11 ! These Burt’s Bees lipsticks are made with 100% naturally moisturizing ingredients like moringa and raspberry seed oils, their packaging is completely recyclable and the container is even made with 60% post-consumer-waste recycled content. That’s worth a kiss.

10 LED Lights Gone are the electricity-sucking holiday lights of old… at least they should be! LED technology uses 80-90% less energy, while lasting WAY longer. The Apex Outdoor Sparkle Orbs look (and run) cool.  Remember, you can recycle your old light sets for free at your local London Drugs!

9 Green Pens Writing Onyx & Green makes a whole line of more eco-friendly office and school supplies, and when it comes to pens you can take your pick. Made from recycled plastic bottles, sustainable bamboo, recycled aluminum, or recycled milk cartons. Green list made & checked twice.

8 Organic Coffees Earth’s Choice. Commercial Drive. Kicking Horse. Ethical Bean. For the coffee lover in your life, London Drugs has a great selection that’s Certified Organic and Fair Trade and comes with 100% local character.

7 Plugs Unplugging The TreeFrog Smart Power Bar 7 saves electricity by automatically shutting off selected plugs (like your printer and monitor) when you shut off your computer. Duh! Smart green gift!

6 Brushes Brushing EcoTools cosmetics brushes are made with recycled aluminum and bamboo.  Beautifully soft on resources. And your face.

5 Great Green Toys!!! (Made with recycled plastic……) Green Toys are made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic. (#5 Polypropylene from recycled milk jugs) and packaged in recycled (and recyclable) cardboard cartons printed with soy inks. They also contain no glues, screws or paint. Every pound of recycled milk jugs used to create a Green Toys product saves enough energy to power 3,000 AAA batteries, a TV for 3 weeks or a laptop computer for a whole month. Oh, and they are really fun to go ‘vroom’ with.

4 Batteries Charging When batteries aren’t included, give the gift that keeps giving. Rechargeables are better for the planet and your pocketbook (We’ve done the math!) Try the Energizer Pro Charger with 4AA’s – it even shows you the charging stages so you know where your holiday energy level is at.

3 Reusable Boxes Give a gift that stores itself! Wrap your present in one of these classy reusable storage boxes with a big red ribbon. Extra green points if you choose a classy seagrass basket made with natural materials.

2 Organic Syrups Sweet gift ideas that work on pancakes, oatmeal or even in your coffee. London Naturals Organic Syrup for the classic Canadian maple experience or Wild Tusker Coconut Syrup, made from 100% pure coconut sap collected from organically grown coconut plantations in Sri Lanka.

And a place where you recycle for free…. Your local London Drugs store will take back all sorts of electronics, small appliances, plastic bags, batteries, light bulbs, and more. (Even broken holiday lights!) We will even take back packaging from any purchase you make in our stores with our Bring Back the Pack program. Find out more at greendeal.ca

However you choose to celebrate YOUR holidays, here’s hoping it’s a wonderful time filled with love, laughter and joy. That’s the REAL Green Deal.

Five helpful green holiday tips from London Drugs

Recycling Santa

DECEMBER 21, 2015, RICHMOND, BC – Once Christmas morning arrives there is always the question of what to do with the wrapping and packaging. How to power your new gadgets and what to do with old electronics and appliances. Here are five green tips from London Drugs this holiday season :

1.  Recycle your packaging
Now people can actually recycle their packaging where they bought it. Our comprehensive Bring Back the Pack recycling program provides an opportunity for all packaging from London Drugs products to be properly recycled. This answers the question of what to do with the Styrofoam surrounding your brand new TV or the cardboard and plastic wrap around your new kitchen toy. London Drugs has been actively recycling Styrofoam since 2008 and has diverted over 250,000lbs of it from landfills.

2.  Recycle your old electronics & small appliances
Bring in the old electronics and appliances that were replaced over the holidays for proper recycling.  Besides electronics like TV’s, computers and video players, customers can also recycle any small appliance with a plug at their nearest London Drugs. This includes toasters, microwaves, kettles, hair dryers, curling irons, televisions, alarm clocks and even cordless phones.

3. Rechargeable Batteries
Did you receive an electronic game or toy? Consider using rechargeable batteries to extend your play, reduce waste and save money in the long run. Popular sizes are all available with compact chargers and provide a great value for those toys designed to entertain your children, big and small, for hours on end. And remember, you can bring in your old batteries for recycling to any London Drugs. For more information on Rechargeables vs Regular Batteries check out our blog article here.

4. Recycle your broken Christmas lights
A string of broken lights is not trash. It contains copper wire and other elements that are worth recycling. Old lights can be taken back to your local London Drugs store. Look for energy-efficient LED lights to replace them.

5. Donate your old cell phones and smartphones
Instead of discarding your old cell phones and smartphones; drop them off at London Drugs for proper recycling in a Call2Recycle collection box.

By working with several key vendors throughout the year London Drugs continues to achieve a 90% plus waste reduction rate in all of its stores across Western Canada.  For more information on recycling at London Drugs visit the recycling section of our greendeal.ca website.

Don’t blow your fuse! Recycle those old Christmas lights for free at London Drugs!

iStock_000013743568Small

Photo: istock

The kids are playing catch with your grandma’s vintage tree ornaments, the dog is rolling around in tinsel and after trying 12 new bulbs, that dang string of lights still just isn’t lighting. Don’t string together a streak of language that will get you put on Santa’s naughty list. Just bring that old set of lights to London Drugs for free recycling.
While you’re there, you might want to pick up some high-efficiency LED lights. According to the US Department of Energy, they have some surprising advantages over old-style incandescent lights:

  • Safer: LEDs are much cooler, reducing risk of combustion or burnt fingers.
  • Sturdier: LEDs are made with epoxy lenses, not glass.
  • Longer lasting: The same LED string could still be in use 40 holiday seasons from now. (Some people I know would still have them on their house)
  • Up to 25 strings of LEDs can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket. So you could create a virtual runway for Rudolph without browning out your street.

You can also save some holiday dollars off your energy bill.

Estimated cost of electricity to light a six-foot tree for 12 hours a day for 40 days (a bit extreme, but you could do it…)

  • With incandescent C-9 lights: $10.00
  • With LED C-9 lights  $0.27
  • With incandescent Mini-lights $2.74
  • With LED Mini-lights $0.82

So gather up those old strings and bring them in for recycling. Less money spent on electricity means more left over for chocolate.

Give the present, not the packaging.

bring-back-the-pack-present-sm

There is something classically fun about wallowing in wrapping and boxes on Christmas morning as the kids tear into their pile of loot. But when product packaging, plastic and Styrofoam are added to the mix, it creates a seasonal garbage glut for municipalities and a trash hassle for Mom and Dad.

For years, London Drugs has offered Bring Back the Pack – our packaging take-back program for anything you buy at our stores. That’s right, just drop off your packaging at customer service as you leave the store, or bring it back later with your receipt.

So why not pass that gift of less packaging forward? If you shop at London Drugs and include a gift receipt with your presents, your giftees can reduce their trash footprint as well.
Think of it as a gift that keeps on giving.

If you like this idea, please share it… we want to help create a holiday season with more happiness and less waste.

A Great Green Gift Basket is as Close as Your Local London Drugs

green-deal-sustainable-giftbox-2

If you need a gift for a friend or client who is into all things ‘green’, look no further. A bundle of GreenDeal products from London Drugs will have something to please almost anyone.
For this box, I chose a variety of food, housewares beauty and cleaning products totaling about $65, including the classy suede-like storage box at $7.99 (I have not yet researched the supply-chain on this particular item, but I like that its very useful and reusable)

Here are some highlights:

Coffee: I chose Ethical Bean because it was on sale, but LD has an awesome variety of organic, locally-roasted fairly traded blends.
Reusable MugThis cool cup from Aladdin is made from recycled plastic and is recyclable at the end of its life. Open the cup and close the loop.

Organic Chocolate – It’s a good idea to have something in the pack that can be eaten right away. There’s a nice milk chocolate variety pack from Green & Blacks, and a dark chocolate bar from Camino – a Canadian Organic, FairTrade company that supports family farmers.

Nature’s Path Granola – I chose the organic fruit & nut blend, but they have lots of other great products, too. It’s an added bonus that their packaging looks tasteful enough to dress up the package.

green-deal-sustainable-giftbox-1smMethod Dish Soap – Sure its cleaning stuff, but it looks like art. Biodegradable, with full ingredient transparency on their website. It’s not Sodium Lauryl Sulfate free, but the Method company does a good job of Corporate Social Responsibility, including offsetting their energy and carbon footprint.

London Drugs Organic Tomato Sauce – This is an example of a great tasting, organic product that competes on price with national, non-organic brands.

Burts Bees Lip Balm – This is a nice treat for whomever gets to it first and claims it. A premium lip balm, from a great company that makes social and environmental factors a big part of their decision making.

To make a bodacious-looking package, I propped everything up with some crumpled newspaper underneath, arranged it and wrapped it all up with a strip of cloth from a spare piece of fabric.

Got someone sustainable to recognize? Check out our list of GreenDeal products, and make up your own gift box. It’s a local, personal gift that says you care about more than just saying ‘thanks’.

Debrand Recycles London Drugs’ Christmas Decorations – a gift that keeps on giving.

Christmas shopping can have a magical feeling, but once those oversized decorations have done their job in London Drugs stores, where do they go? To solve this challenge, London Drugs worked with Debrand – a unique company who specializes in repurposing the awkward, the branded and the difficult-to-recycle materials that corporations inevitably collect.

The Christmas decorations in this case were not made from recyclable materials, and they are too big to be used at home. So Debrand began contacting places where they might be re-used in larger spaces. Ultimately, they found a new home through local school boards, who will be distributing the re-usable decorations for use in schools, continuing to spread holiday cheer. Thanks, Debrand team!

For next year, maybe Santa will bring us recyclable store decorations… that would be the REAL Red & Green Deal!

What do you get at the last minute for the person who has everything green?

Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate
These bars are so stylish you don’t even need to wrap them. Try the mint-filled bar for a classic festive flavour, or the 85% cocoa version for the true dark chocolate connoisseur. If you can’t decide, go for the Mini Bar Collection. One bar a month for the whole year. Or 12 hours of outright green gluttony.

Fair Trade, Organic Coffee
London Drugs has a great selection of certified brands – Saltspring, Ethical Bean, Farmers First, Kicking Horse – from decaf to high-test. Not sure what the difference is with Fair Trade? Check out our video on Ethical Bean.

Batteries Included
Whoever is on your list, chances are they have something that runs on batteries. Rechargeables are definitely the way to go. Do the math and you’ll see that they really are much cheaper than disposables (as long as you don’t accidentally dispose of them, of course) and newer technology means they last a long time and power even high-energy devices like digital cameras. Remember you can bring old rechargeables and regular alkaline cells back to us for responsible recycling.

The Tea Room Organic Green Earl Grey Tea Infused Dark Chocolate
Organic tea is nice. Organic tea-infused chocolate is luxurious. The flavour is delicate and different. Perfect for the tea-lover on your list who is probably tired of getting nothing but teas.

Que Pasa Organic Corn Tortilla Chips
Okay, this is actually more of a holiday snack idea. These Que Pasa Tortilla Chips are really good, certified organic and are cooked in non-GMO pressed canola oil. They even come in a festive red corn version that will look great on the table next to the green holly centerpiece. And what the heck – you could give them as a gift… a big crunchy gift.

Planet Earth DVD
This is an amazing 4-disc series, shot in HD, available in DVD or Blu-ray 550 minutes of some of the most amazing scenery and animals our planet has to offer, narrated by David Attenborough. It’s the green equivalent of watching football all Christmas day.

Panasonic VIERA 58-Inch 1080P Plasma TV
Perhaps not as green as a pair of organic cotton fair-trade boxer briefs, but even the most ardent environmentalist would be secretly happy to see this behemoth flat box under the tree. The Panasonic VIERA 58-Inch mercury and lead-free screen panel lasts up to 100,000 hours. (That’s 10,917 straight viewings of the entire Planet Earth DVD set) And of course, since you bought it from London Drugs, your green giftee can bring back all the packaging, including styrofoam, and even their old fat-screen for free responsible recycling. Just make sure you give them the receipt to show at customer service. You can always black out the price if you want to keep this 58″ gift discreet.

Pack it a bit greener this Christmas.

So you’ve shopped London Drugs for some fair trade, organic and local goodies for your family, and what the heck; maybe some fun techno gadgets as well. (Life’s a balance, after all) Now you’re looking for a greener choice to protect your treasures until they arrive at their appointed hearth.
One option is to pack them in a Hilroy Biodegradable Bubble Envelope. On the paper side, it’s made of FSC-certified 60% recycled fiber that contains 50% post-consumer waste material. Inside, the oh-so-fun-to-pop bubblewrap is made from oxo-biodegradable plastic, which is designed to break down after its usable lifespan. (It will begin to degrade in as little as 24 months, according to the manufacturer – you can read more on oxo-biodegradable plastics on Wikipedia) As an added bonus, these envelopes are also a product of Canada, which means your shipping package hasn’t already been shipped from overseas.
Choose from 4”x 8”, 6”x10” and 8.5”x12” sizes depending on how naughty or nice your recipients have been. Be sure to let them know they have 24 months to send you something back or pop all the bubbles.
