Love single serve coffee, but hate the waste? Melitta introduces the world’s first certified 100% compostable single serve coffee pods.

If you crave the taste and convenience of single serve coffee (K-Cups) you aren’t alone. By some estimates, 12 BILLION of them will be sold this year – enough to circle the earth around 13 times!  Until now, that meant a lot of waste that was difficult, if not impossible to recycle. But now, thanks to Melitta and Canadian researchers at the University of Guelph’s Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre, a solution is at hand!

PurPod100™ cups are the world’s first single-serve coffee cups* that have been certified 100% compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).

That means, according to the Melitta website, that “testing shows the pod can break down completely in as little as 5 weeks” That doesn’t necessarily mean every local compost program will accept them. Municipalities and other composting facility operators have their own guidelines for what they accept as being compostable. But many DO automatically accept items that are Certified 100% Compostable by BPI. And testing is underway to see how well the pods break down in home compost situations.

Even with those caveats, the development of a certified compostable coffee pod is big news. But it’s really still all about enjoying great tasting coffee! So if you have been avoiding your Kuerig because you feel bad about pod waste, just pick up some great tasting Melitta pods at London Drugs, compost your leftover pods and you’ll sleep better no matter how many cups you brew.

All Melitta single serve coffee pod varieties at London Drugs feature the new PurPod100™ compostable cup.

*PurPod100™ cups are designed to work with Kuerig 2.0 brewers, and it should be noted that they will work best if the brewer is regularly cleaned and de-scaled.

The new Melitta compostable pods are almost entirely made of plant based material, and the ring is actually made from coffee chaff – a byproduct that is usually wasted!

Earth’s Choice Helps Tackle Waste With State-of-the-Art Omnidegradable Coffee Bags.

Earths Choice Biodegradable Coffee Bag

For coffee lovers, keeping beans fresh has always meant sacrificing some waste to the environment. Coffee bags must provide a shelf-stable barrier to oxygen and moisture, while providing a one-way valve to release naturally occurring CO2 from the roasted coffee.

That means most coffee bags are made from plastic that will last for thousands of years in our landfills – or worse, in the natural environment.

In line with their philosophy of offering sustainable products at a reasonable price point, Earth’s Choice wanted to make a better packaging choice.

So they selected a bag from TekPak solutions, made with Organic Compound Plastic (OCP) designed to break down in any environment where microbes are present – landfill, oceans, soil – eventually leaving only water, CO2 and a tiny percentage of organic matter.

Earths Choice Coffee London Drtugs biodegradable bag Green Deal Sustainability ProductEarth’s Choice says the bag is currently the only one of this type in Canada, and will decompose in less than 5 years in any post-consumer facility. (Standard coffee bags on the market can remain in a landfill for over 500 years, or multiple generations)

This packaging material complies with ASTM standards for biodegradability, and the TekPak website also has a lot of interesting information on different kinds of plastics, degradable and otherwise.

Unfortunately, the bag won’t yet break down as fast as the coffee grounds themselves, but it’s definitely a big step in the right direction. Add that to its organic and fair trade certification, and that makes Earth’s Choice a great choice when you are looking for your next green caffeine fix.

London Drugs RecycleBag helps spread the Green Deal word to big crowds at the Healthy Family Expo 2016.

Family-expo-LD-booth

It was a happy herd of moms, dads, toddlers and tots (and the occasional stroller gridlock) that descended on the Vancouver Convention Centre East Sunday March 6th. Some of our favourite Green Deal brands were also there, including Nature’s Path, Seventh Generation, New World Natural Foods and our booth-mates, Earths Choice, serving up delicious organic coffee all day long.

It was a great way for families to sample tasty treats, look for healthier, greener product alternatives and enter to win some great prizes.

Family-expo-RecycleBag-LCBut one of the most popular items was our recycled (and recyclable) What’s the Green Deal RecycleBag, which lists the things you can recycle at London Drugs. We gave every single one of them out, and it was gratifying to see so many families taking home our message of recycling.

Big thanks to Maria and Kevin from our Olympic Village location and Tracy and Ty, from our Davie Street Store for hanging out and handing out all day long. Bonus points for Ty who was our official spokes-voice, starring on the Healthy Family Expo video!

If you want to know more about the Healthy Family Expo, have a look at some of the photos below and check out their website. It was a great day of activities, music and green goodies!

What is B Corporation Certification?

B Corp Certification

If you scan the shelves for Certified Organic, Fair Trade, Kosher, Cruelty-Free or other certifications, you’ll soon start seeing a new label on the block.
Certified B Corporation is an up-and-coming standard that goes beyond the qualities of the product you hold in your hand and sets a standard for the behaviour of the company itself.
B Corps are certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
To qualify, companies must complete the rigorous B Impact Assessment and earn a reviewed minimum score of 80 out of 200 points. This assessment measures everything from environmental practices and waste to labour standards and community practices. This assessment is reviewed, documentation may be required, and re-certification is required every 2 years.
There are now over 1000 B Corps in 30+ countries around the world, and the movement is growing.
Some of the great Green Deal products made by B Corps that you’ll find on London Drugs’ shelves include Method, Badger, Seventh Generation, Lunapads, Salt Spring Coffee, Ethical Bean Coffee, Manitoba Harvest, Preserve and Traditional Medicinals.
B Corporation Certification has been called “The highest standard for socially responsible business”, but their ‘Declaration of Interdependence’ says it best:
“We envision an new sector of the economy which harnesses the power of private enterprise to create public benefit…” You can read the rest on the B Corp website.
So if you want to buy from a company that’s working to make a difference, look for the B.  It’s one corporate certification that gets an ‘A’ from the Green Deal team.

Be my Green Valentine.

A Green Valentine's Day Poem

Roses are red
Recycling is green
Will you make my Valentines
A sustainable scene?

I’ll hand feed you chocolate
Every nibble Fair Trade
Brew organic coffee
Before the bed’s made

We’ll cook veggie dinners
And compost each night
Recharge our batteries
Under LED lights

When we move in
And need things for our home
I’ll take back the packaging
Even the dang Styrofoam

Old gadgets and computers
Won’t clutter our space
I’ll take them for recycling
To a responsible place

And years down the road
When our meds all expire
They’ll go back to the pharmacy
So the fish don’t get higher

Now that you know
just how I feel
Tell me our love
Is the real Green Deal

Then let’s share the earth
We don’t need to abuse it
I’ll give you my heart
If you say you’ll reuse it

Want to shop a little more local for Christmas? London Drugs is right up your street.

ld_story

There are a lot of reasons to join the local economy. From supporting good jobs to contributing to your community, spending your dollars locally makes a difference. But thinking local can go beyond artisans and craft fairs. London Drugs is 100% Canadian Owned, and we service our network of 78 stores from our head offices right here in Western Canada (Richmond, BC) We employ some 7000 people, focusing on truly serving the communities in which we operate. Because of our Canadian roots, and our regional focus, we work to stock a selection of Canadian and local market products. Here are just a few examples that might put a little more local love under your tree.

Fresh Is Best Tortilla Chips – Made in small batches in the pseudo-Mexican desert of Kamloops BC, these original snacks will add a dash of festive colour to your table.

L3741188Manitoba Honey – Our London Orchard brand of honey comes from Manitoba, made by 100% Canadian bees! Perfect for holiday baking and recipes.

Dolce D’Or Chocolates – “Sweet Gold” made in Delta, BC. Which means you can eat more of them (Don’t ask why, it’s just one of those things)

Ganong Chocolates – Did you know this family-owned Canadian company has been making candies and chocolates in New Brunswick for 140 years?!  Their Delecto line is perfect for Christmas gifting. Check out their video story on YouTube here.

Camino Chocolate – a Canadian Organic, FairTrade company that supports family farmers. That calls for another piece of chocolate.

Nature’s Path – A great company that started in BC and is beginning to go mainstream in the US. Dedicated to organic and non-GMO, they make great cereals for stocking up at home, and snack bars for stuffing stockings.

LD-Coffee-smallFair Trade Organic Coffee – Perfect for an office gift or gift basket. We have a huge selection, roasted in Canada, including blends by Commercial Drive, Salt Spring Coffee, Kicking Horse Coffee, Ethical Bean, Level Ground and Earth’s Choice. Find out more about our coffees in our blog post here.

Uncle Luke’s 100% Pure Maple Syrup – A Canadian tradition from a Canadian company who has been making syrup for over 35 years. Who couldn’t use a jug of this sweet love?

Cascades Bathroom Tissue – OK, not the funnest gift to unwrap. But think practically here – with holiday guests arriving, better stock up. 100% Canadian and recycled… from some of the very materials we collect locally!

So next time you are heading out to do some shopping, consider that local comes in different sizes. And remember, when it comes to larger retailers, if you live in Western Canada, London Drugs is about as local as they come.

A Great Green Gift Basket is as Close as Your Local London Drugs

green-deal-sustainable-giftbox-2

If you need a gift for a friend or client who is into all things ‘green’, look no further. A bundle of GreenDeal products from London Drugs will have something to please almost anyone.
For this box, I chose a variety of food, housewares beauty and cleaning products totaling about $65, including the classy suede-like storage box at $7.99 (I have not yet researched the supply-chain on this particular item, but I like that its very useful and reusable)

Here are some highlights:

Coffee: I chose Ethical Bean because it was on sale, but LD has an awesome variety of organic, locally-roasted fairly traded blends.
Reusable MugThis cool cup from Aladdin is made from recycled plastic and is recyclable at the end of its life. Open the cup and close the loop.

Organic Chocolate – It’s a good idea to have something in the pack that can be eaten right away. There’s a nice milk chocolate variety pack from Green & Blacks, and a dark chocolate bar from Camino – a Canadian Organic, FairTrade company that supports family farmers.

Nature’s Path Granola – I chose the organic fruit & nut blend, but they have lots of other great products, too. It’s an added bonus that their packaging looks tasteful enough to dress up the package.

green-deal-sustainable-giftbox-1smMethod Dish Soap – Sure its cleaning stuff, but it looks like art. Biodegradable, with full ingredient transparency on their website. It’s not Sodium Lauryl Sulfate free, but the Method company does a good job of Corporate Social Responsibility, including offsetting their energy and carbon footprint.

London Drugs Organic Tomato Sauce – This is an example of a great tasting, organic product that competes on price with national, non-organic brands.

Burts Bees Lip Balm – This is a nice treat for whomever gets to it first and claims it. A premium lip balm, from a great company that makes social and environmental factors a big part of their decision making.

To make a bodacious-looking package, I propped everything up with some crumpled newspaper underneath, arranged it and wrapped it all up with a strip of cloth from a spare piece of fabric.

Got someone sustainable to recognize? Check out our list of GreenDeal products, and make up your own gift box. It’s a local, personal gift that says you care about more than just saying ‘thanks’.
