London Drugs Medicine Hat diverts 666lbs of waste from landfill in one weekend, with an impactful car-seat recycling event.

London Drugs Kids Car Seat Recycling Event Waste Reduction

On October 1st and 2nd, the citizens of Medicine Hat and surrounding areas did their community proud, bringing a total of 74 car seats in to their Local London Drugs for recycling. It was all part of a special Kids’ Car Seat and Drug Round Up Event, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, The City of Medicine Hat, KidSeat Recyclers and Safety City.

London Drugs Car Seat Recycling Alberta Free Recycling EventThere is usually a $10 recycling levy to process the car seats, but this amount was offset with a $10 London Drugs Gift Card, rewarding those who made the effort to recycle beyond the blue box. (Some folks made the effort from as far away as Saskatchewan!) Safety City added even more value with free car seat safety inspections.

Driving more awareness of keeping old and expired medications out of our landfills and water systems is also extremely important. Remember that you can bring old medications in to your London Drugs Pharmacist for proper disposal and recycling at any time.

If you missed the event and still have an old car seat cluttering up your garage, visit the KidSeat Recyclers web page and find out how you can recycle it right.

The Medicine Hat team has shown us all how – they are the REAL Green Deal!

Multi-Material BC (MMBC) is partnering with London Drugs to offer this convenient option, and this one-year pilot program will be evaluated for potential introduction in other parts of the province in the future.

“MMBC’s partnership with London Drugs will increase access to consistent and convenient recycling of plastics and packaging for Vancouver residents,” said Allen Langdon, Managing Director of MMBC. “Our aim is to make recycling easier and ensure we divert more material away from landfills to be recycled into new products.”

Plastic bags and overwrap are recycled into new grocery bags, plastic pallets, containers, crates, pipes, decking and park benches. Plastic foam packaging is recycled into picture frames, construction trim, moulding, park benches and fence posts.

“At London Drugs we are always looking for ways to enhance our retail-leading sustainable programs with the goal of providing our customers with new opportunities and channels to reduce waste and recycle more,” said Kevin Sorby, General Manager, Retail Operations, London Drugs. “This new pilot program provides the citizens of Vancouver with the opportunity to go beyond their regular recycling and waste reduction habits with the ability to now be able to recycle ALL clean household foam packaging and soft plastics at London Drugs. This partnership with MMBC is our further commitment to sustainability and we look forward to seeing the results of this year-long pilot program at our 11 Vancouver London Drugs locations.”

Five helpful green holiday tips from London Drugs

Recycling Santa

DECEMBER 21, 2015, RICHMOND, BC – Once Christmas morning arrives there is always the question of what to do with the wrapping and packaging. How to power your new gadgets and what to do with old electronics and appliances. Here are five green tips from London Drugs this holiday season :

1.  Recycle your packaging
Now people can actually recycle their packaging where they bought it. Our comprehensive Bring Back the Pack recycling program provides an opportunity for all packaging from London Drugs products to be properly recycled. This answers the question of what to do with the Styrofoam surrounding your brand new TV or the cardboard and plastic wrap around your new kitchen toy. London Drugs has been actively recycling Styrofoam since 2008 and has diverted over 250,000lbs of it from landfills.

2.  Recycle your old electronics & small appliances
Bring in the old electronics and appliances that were replaced over the holidays for proper recycling.  Besides electronics like TV’s, computers and video players, customers can also recycle any small appliance with a plug at their nearest London Drugs. This includes toasters, microwaves, kettles, hair dryers, curling irons, televisions, alarm clocks and even cordless phones.

3. Rechargeable Batteries
Did you receive an electronic game or toy? Consider using rechargeable batteries to extend your play, reduce waste and save money in the long run. Popular sizes are all available with compact chargers and provide a great value for those toys designed to entertain your children, big and small, for hours on end. And remember, you can bring in your old batteries for recycling to any London Drugs. For more information on Rechargeables vs Regular Batteries check out our blog article here.

4. Recycle your broken Christmas lights
A string of broken lights is not trash. It contains copper wire and other elements that are worth recycling. Old lights can be taken back to your local London Drugs store. Look for energy-efficient LED lights to replace them.

5. Donate your old cell phones and smartphones
Instead of discarding your old cell phones and smartphones; drop them off at London Drugs for proper recycling in a Call2Recycle collection box.

By working with several key vendors throughout the year London Drugs continues to achieve a 90% plus waste reduction rate in all of its stores across Western Canada.  For more information on recycling at London Drugs visit the recycling section of our greendeal.ca website.

Onyx+Green – a Canadian company making school and office supplies more sustainable.

Onyx+Green sustainab;le back-to-school supplies

One bamboo writing instrument may not seem like a big green deal, but consider this: According to the EPA, Americans throw away 1.6 billion disposable pens every year. (Yes, BILLION!) That’s a lot of waste to write off. So if you want to make a green difference you can see and touch every day, consider your school and office supplies.

Onyx+Green Recycled PensWrite with recycled pride. Onyx + Green offers pens and mechanical pencils made from from bamboo. recycled aluminum, recycled PET plastic (the kind from recycled drink bottles) and even recycled carton material.

L8817652Cut into waste with biodegradable scissors. Corn-based plastic handles and metal blades mean that these scissors won’t be around for hundreds of years in the landfill when you are done with them.

Go treeless for your notes. These Onyx + Green notepads are made from…. stone. That’s right, crushed stone is bound into smooth, white, water-resistant sheets that consume nary a single twig.

Contain it all with natural materials. Our modern fabrics contain a lot of plastic. But these styling pencil cases are 90% natural and biodegradable (made with a ramie leaf / jute plant blend fabric)

Less packaging is more better. OK, bad grammar. But by using simple paperboard designs (no bubble plastic!) and soy based inks, Onyx+Green has made it easy to keep packaging waste to a minimum. And that’s worth writing about.

The local connection. The products are made in China, but designed in Canada, and importantly, produced by a Canadian-headquartered company (Onyx+Green is a division of Onyx+Blue, a Quebec-based company) so you are supporting Canadian jobs and profits, while still getting affordable products.

If you want to add a sustainable reminder to your everyday school and office routine, take a look at the Onyx+ Green product line. It’s the write Green Deal for Back-to-School. (Sorry, that pun probably gets an F)

Lethbridge store recycles with the best of them in London Drugs Waste Audit

Every year, we visit every single London Drugs store to dig through their trash. But it goes deeper than that. The Waste Audit is part of a continuous process of improvement that looks at the recycling output of each department in the store, and helps make suggestions on how things can be tweaked to keep every last gram of recycling out of the landfill.

Retail Operations Sustainability Specialist Maury McCausland recently visited our Lethbridge London Drugs store, and found that their waste diversion rate is going strong. We captured the Waste Audit process on video, as Lethbridge store Manager Chris Mabie was on hand to help wrangle the bags and pick up on improvements his team can still make.

Let’s raise a bag of recycling and toast the Lethbridge team – you are the real Green Deal!

How DO you recycle Styrofoam™, anyway?

When London Drugs began taking back its packaging and recycling expanded polystyrene (better known by one of its trade names, Styrofoam™) it was a challenge. The stuff is bulky and requires specific equipment to process. But in its condensed form, its actually a valuable commodity.

Our recycling partner, FOAM ONLY, has made a business out of recycling this much-maligned packaging material, and we went inside their Coquitlam, BC plant to find out more.

So the next time you bring back Styrofoam™ to recycle from one of your London Drugs purchases, you can rest easy knowing its not going to be polluting our environment or hogging landfill space. It will have another life, somewhere down the road.

And you won’t even have to deal with the squeaking…
