Announcing a better way to recycle your cleaner and air freshener waste, with London Drugs, Febreeze and Terracycle.

cleaner-triggers-smSpring cleaning has always been a messy job, and it can produce lots of garbage: plastic air freshener cartridges and the blister packs they come in; trigger heads on spray bottles; screw caps from bathroom and kitchen cleaners; used packages of disposable cleaning wipes, and more.
Now you can drop off your ‘cleaner waste’ at new drop boxes installed at 78 London Drugs stores stores across Western Canada, through a pilot program launched by Febreeze and Terracycle.
The items are technically recyclable, however, the high cost of separating mixed plastics means the infrastructure to recycle them isn’t available across the country.
This prompted Febreze (a Procter & Gamble brand) and TerraCycle to join together with London Drugs in an effort to make recycling easier for consumers.
Residents in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan will find clearly marked drop-off boxes at London Drugs stores, into which they can deposit their home cleaning and air-freshening waste.
Once full, the boxes will be picked up by UPS and shipped to TerraCycle, an independent recycling agency specializing in diverting from landfill what municipalities deem “non-recyclable.”
“We have seen a number of great successes in our partnership with TerraCycle, and we are proud to be able to expand upon the types of items our customers can recycle,” said Maury McCausland, Retail Operations Sustainability Specialist at London Drugs. “This program is a natural extension to our Bring Back the Pack and What’s the Green Deal? programs, so we expect to see great engagement from those who are dedicated to diverting waste from our landfills.”
“We’re thrilled to be working on this new in-store recycling program,” adds TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky. “Diverting home cleaning waste from landfill is a huge job, but with these drop-off boxes, it’s made easy — whenever you’re planning a visit to London Drugs, you bring your used trigger heads along and leave them at the store. We take care of the rest.”
The Air and Home Care Brigade contributes two cents for each item of waste toward a charity – all money raised from customer drop-offs to the London Drugs pilot program will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Air and Home Care Brigade accepted waste:

  • All brands and sizes of plastic air fresheners, plastic electronic (i.e. plug in) air fresheners and plastic air freshener cartridges (including plastic car air freshener products).
  • All brands of plastic bottle trigger heads and pumps (used for air care and home cleaning products such as kitchen / bathroom cleaner sprays) and flexible cleaning wipe packaging (intended for home cleaning.
  • All related flexible plastic air care and home care product packaging of any brand (please remove any cardboard (usually the back) or other recyclable components first and recycle these with your household collections).
  • Please check with your local council to see if plastic bottle caps (for air care products, and washing up liquid bottles) can be recycled locally – where a solution is available please recycle the caps locally – if no local solution is available these can also be sent in for recycling

Four Green Cleaners Face Off in the Greener Cleaner Showdown!

It’s Spring Cleaning time at the cabin, so we put some of our Green Deal featured spray cleaners to the test with some duct tape and an old windsurfer.

Jennifer Martin, Green Hero Mom from Chilliwack, shows us how its done.

119-1024x648

Raising 5 kids is no small task, yet Jennifer has decided to do it as sustainably as she can. That’s why she was chosen as a winner in the Nominate a Green Hero Contest recently featured in the Juicy Green Mom blog.
In answer to the question: “Name 3 things that make this individual a Green Hero”, her nomination said:

  • Cloth diapered and breast-fed all five of her kids!
  • Recycles, composts, up cycles, and reuses almost everything. Her family of 7 only puts out a 1/2 bag of trash every two weeks!
  • Takes her kids and their friends on hikes 2-3 times a month, where they pick up litter and recycling as they learn about nature.

Blogger Judith interviewed Jennifer and learned even more impressive details about her her dedication to living green.

1. Why is being a Green Hero important to you?

Because of all the kids in my life who I’m a role model for. I’m a parent, foster parent, volunteer at my kids’ school, and Cub Scout leader.

2. How do you share with others about living green?

I actively teach my kids, including those I volunteer with, about the three R’s {Reduce, Reuse, Recycle} and how to implement them into everyday life. One of the things I do at my kids’ school is help with the school’s organic garden, teaching kids how things grow and where their food comes from. They’re also learning about composting and healthy diet through this program. Our Cub Scouts also frequently do community cleanups and recycling drives.

3. What are your top 5 tips for green living?

  • Compost kitchen scraps.
  • Start a garden!
  • Don’t use or buy single use/disposable products.
  • Get creative! There are lots of great ideas to reuse everyday items on the internet.
  • Get the kids involved and have fun with it!

Jennifer wins a $100 London Drugs Gift Card for her great green efforts. Congratulations!
But choosing the winner was difficult – Jenifer was just one of many amazing Green Heroes out there. Here are some of the other things our nominees are doing:
Purchasing used toys and clothing to avoid unnecessary future waste (Angie from Saskatchewan)
Volunteering with the David Suzuki Foundation (Stephanie from BC)
Implementing recycling programs and energy reduction programs at work (Eva from BC)
Running a local fruit rescue organization (Amy from Alberta)
Being a Master Composter (Redworm_Mama from Alberta)
Reusing to the max (Joveena from Alberta)
Making YouTube videos about waste reduction (Suzan from Alberta)
Way to go – you keep us all inspired!

Watering your garden with the kids’ used bathwater? That’s a Green Hero! Congratulations to winner: Jeff Stransky!

Jeff_S_200x150London Drugs and 660News asked Calgarians to nominate individuals who take recycling beyond the blue bin. Recycling and being green can be a thankless job. We think people who go take the extra time to make green choices deserve some recognition.

Lise Stransky nominated Jeff.  Here’s what she wrote:

Jeff is one of my roommates (okay, full disclosure, he is also my husband), He is very quiet about his green ways, but his actions and choices have a huge impact. Here are a few reasons why he is my Green Hero:

  • He is passionate about composting. He manages two earth bins in our backyard, making sure all our compostable materials are returned to our yard.
  • He rides his bike, takes the bus, or runs to and from work.
  • He uses a handkerchief instead of kleenex.
  • He doesn’t just recycle. He re-purposes and reuses as much as he can. Gum containers, peanut butter jars. boxes and bread bags are all diverted from the recycling bin and given new lives in his work room. He has been known to cut up his old clothes for use as cleaning rags.
  • He quietly goes through our recycling bin and garbage to double check that I haven’t put anything in there that doesn’t belong (or can be re-purposed – see above)
  • He uses a weed puller instead of chemicals to pull out dandelions.
  • He advocated for a manual lawnmower instead of an electric or gas lawn mower.
  • He buys used instead of new whenever he can.
  • He questions products that claim to be green, researching them to ensure they live up to what they claim.
  • He avoids chemicals, and shaves with a razor and chemical free soap.
  • He helped champion the removal of Keurig cups at his work, supporting a greener alternative.
  • He has the Environmental Working group app on his phone, so he can check the chemical levels and safety of products before we buy them, including sunscreen, lotion and vegetables
  • Finally, he rescues the bathwater from our sons’ baths for use in the garden, hauling it outside from the tub in huge pails in order to water our veggies.
  • He is committed to living with a small footprint and minimally impacting our earth so it remains healthy for generations to come.Wow!   Way to go Jeff!  Thanks for being a Green Hero!

And a BIG “thank you” to all who submitted their Green Hero nominees!

The City of Airdrie and London Drugs partner to host the largest community clean-up event ever held in the city

community-clean-up-airdrieLondon Drugs is pleased to be partnered with the City of Airdrie to provide residents with an opportunity to recycle numerous household items at the largest community clean-up event ever held in the city.

“It is extremely important to divert as much material from the landfill as we can,” says Mara Pratt, Education Coordinator with the City of Airdrie’s Waste & Recycling Services. “We are very excited to partner with London Drugs to be able to provide residents with this opportunity to recycle many household items.”

The City of Airdrie has held an annual paper shredding event for the past several years to properly recycle paper waste. This year they are being joined by London Drugs and other community organizations so that residents can bring tires, metal, clothing, small appliances, electronics, non-food related Styrofoam, disposable cameras, Inkjet & Laser cartridges, batteries, plastic bags, CFL light blubs, Fluorescent tubes (up to 4 ft), smoke alarms, bicycles and car seats for proper recycling.

Residents are asked to start going through any items they may want to get rid of and bring them to the London Drugs parking lot on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. After dropping off their items, residents are invited to enjoy a fundraising BBQ hosted by local animal rescue, Bail Us Out.

“Together with enthusiastic support of Airdrie residents, we can divert thousands of pounds of materials from the landfill through this event,” says Colleen Lancaster, Store Manager at the Airdrie London Drugs location which diverted over 82,444 pounds from the city’s landfill last year through their own in-store reducing, recycling, and composting strategies.

Following is a list of organizations that will be supporting this event:

Green Heroes of the North – We Salute you!

A lot of ‘green’ talk often focuses on urban lifestyles, but as this video shows, Canadians living in more rural areas can be just as heroic when it comes to recycling and community sustainability spirit. We recently visited Prince George BC, where Green Deal’s Lorne Craig delivered a presentation on sustainability issues at College Heights Secondary. This school hosts the Northern Leadership Conference – a day of learning and inspiration for 200 kids from across BC’s North.

We also documented the 10th anniversary of their annual highway cleanup, celebrating 1000km of roadside trash-busting. College Heights teacher Cindy Smith has been tirelessly organizing the event for the last decade, and her inspiration to the students definitely rubbed off on us!

DSC_1732Next, we visited the Prince George London Drugs’ Recycling Roundup where Manager Christian Schenk lifted TV’s, boxed up batteries and took in tires with Tire Stewardship BC. It’s his personal mission to let everyone know what they can recycle at his store!

On the musical side, we attended the premiere concert of the Up Your Watershed Tour, where kids from Highglen Montessori delivered a powerful set of enviro-themed songs under the expert musical direction of Holly Arntzen and Kevin Wright of the Artist Response Team.

Also known as ‘The Wilds’, Holly and Kevin are touring the Fraser River watershed, teaching and performing with groups of kids at concert stops along the way. (London Drugs is proud to be a sponsor of this awe-inspiring tour as well)

Thanks to the hundreds of Everyday Green Heroes we met on our first Northern Tour. YOU are the REAL Green Deal!

Your Guide to Going Gluten Free … Organically!

P11-AmieHealth-1400x760

‘Guest Posts’ are blog articles written by people outside London Drugs. These may be independent authors or companies who are featured in our GreenDeal Product Program. We review the content before posting and provide this space as a forum to offer information and discuss sustainability issues. So please let us know what you think!

If you could make one little shift in your diet that would put you on the path to health, would you? For millions of people, going gluten free has changed their lives and improved their health dramatically. While a gluten free lifestyle might not be for everyone, everyone can enjoy gluten free food – when it’s delicious and nutritious, of course.

So, how can you get the best of gluten free? Quality is key when it comes to gluten free. At Nature’s Path, we’ve been creating tasty gluten free options for 30 years using organic ingredients that offer a balanced profile of fibre, carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats so your body gets all the nutrients you need to thrive.

These tips will help you get the best of gluten free:

  • Become a label detective: Gluten hides everywhere – as do food additives – so choose organic, non-GMO food made without artificial ingredients.
  • Eat organic. By choosing gluten-free foods that are also organic, you can avoid consuming harmful pesticides.
  • Ask questions. It’s OK to have questions about going gluten-free, so speak to a registered dietitian or doctor.
  • Have a plan. This easy to follow gluten free meal plan from culinary nutritionist Amie Valpone will get you started with gourmet recipes – as well as tips for stocking your gluten free pantry.
  • Most important, enjoy! When you put quality and your health first, you’ll have a range of tasty products, from cereals to superfoods to waffles to snack bars, to keep you nourished and satisfied.
