London Drugs RecycleBag helps spread the Green Deal word to big crowds at the Healthy Family Expo 2016.

Family-expo-LD-booth

It was a happy herd of moms, dads, toddlers and tots (and the occasional stroller gridlock) that descended on the Vancouver Convention Centre East Sunday March 6th. Some of our favourite Green Deal brands were also there, including Nature’s Path, Seventh Generation, New World Natural Foods and our booth-mates, Earths Choice, serving up delicious organic coffee all day long.

It was a great way for families to sample tasty treats, look for healthier, greener product alternatives and enter to win some great prizes.

Family-expo-RecycleBag-LCBut one of the most popular items was our recycled (and recyclable) What’s the Green Deal RecycleBag, which lists the things you can recycle at London Drugs. We gave every single one of them out, and it was gratifying to see so many families taking home our message of recycling.

Big thanks to Maria and Kevin from our Olympic Village location and Tracy and Ty, from our Davie Street Store for hanging out and handing out all day long. Bonus points for Ty who was our official spokes-voice, starring on the Healthy Family Expo video!

If you want to know more about the Healthy Family Expo, have a look at some of the photos below and check out their website. It was a great day of activities, music and green goodies!

London Drugs voted one of BC’s top 10 influential brands in 2016.

London Drugs Sustainability leadership

BCBusiness and market research firm Ipsos once again rated BC’s leading brands, and London Drugs is proud to be right near the top. London Drugs has been one of BC’s ‘Most Loved’ brands on the BC Business list  for the last few years, but this year the survey went beyond ‘love’ to rate brands for ‘influence’.

Ipsos’s Michael Rodenburgh says, “To actually have influence means that you have a level of impact beyond what you’re delivering, “These brands have a fundamental impact on how you operate in the world—that’s the distinguishing factor.”

Key attributes included brands seen as socially responsible; and as making a positive contribution to B.C. – two central goals of our ‘What’s the Green Deal’ sustainability program.

We can’t say for sure that our in-store recycling or Bring Back the Pack programs had a direct influence on our ranking. But we will definitely take this recognition as a sign of encouragement and vow to continue our efforts to help our customers shop, and live a little greener – in BC and beyond.

“The most influential brands are part of our daily lives, our routine, and ultimately they help make life better, more interesting and more meaningful,” concludes Rodenburgh. “Achieving that is no easy task.”

For 2016, we look forward to making our influence an even more positive, and sustainable one.

For more info on the survey and results, check out the BC Business article here.

Five helpful green holiday tips from London Drugs

Recycling Santa

DECEMBER 21, 2015, RICHMOND, BC – Once Christmas morning arrives there is always the question of what to do with the wrapping and packaging. How to power your new gadgets and what to do with old electronics and appliances. Here are five green tips from London Drugs this holiday season :

1.  Recycle your packaging
Now people can actually recycle their packaging where they bought it. Our comprehensive Bring Back the Pack recycling program provides an opportunity for all packaging from London Drugs products to be properly recycled. This answers the question of what to do with the Styrofoam surrounding your brand new TV or the cardboard and plastic wrap around your new kitchen toy. London Drugs has been actively recycling Styrofoam since 2008 and has diverted over 250,000lbs of it from landfills.

2.  Recycle your old electronics & small appliances
Bring in the old electronics and appliances that were replaced over the holidays for proper recycling.  Besides electronics like TV’s, computers and video players, customers can also recycle any small appliance with a plug at their nearest London Drugs. This includes toasters, microwaves, kettles, hair dryers, curling irons, televisions, alarm clocks and even cordless phones.

3. Rechargeable Batteries
Did you receive an electronic game or toy? Consider using rechargeable batteries to extend your play, reduce waste and save money in the long run. Popular sizes are all available with compact chargers and provide a great value for those toys designed to entertain your children, big and small, for hours on end. And remember, you can bring in your old batteries for recycling to any London Drugs. For more information on Rechargeables vs Regular Batteries check out our blog article here.

4. Recycle your broken Christmas lights
A string of broken lights is not trash. It contains copper wire and other elements that are worth recycling. Old lights can be taken back to your local London Drugs store. Look for energy-efficient LED lights to replace them.

5. Donate your old cell phones and smartphones
Instead of discarding your old cell phones and smartphones; drop them off at London Drugs for proper recycling in a Call2Recycle collection box.

By working with several key vendors throughout the year London Drugs continues to achieve a 90% plus waste reduction rate in all of its stores across Western Canada.  For more information on recycling at London Drugs visit the recycling section of our greendeal.ca website.

Congratulations to London Drugs’ Sustainability Vendor Partner of the Year for 2015 – There’s a Method to their Green-ness!

The Green Deal team was front and center at the Annual London Drugs Partnership Show in Toronto this week, as Clint Mahlman and the executive announced our first ever Sustainability Vendor of the Year.

It was a tough choice, as so many of our Green Deal product suppliers have amazing stories to tell, and are making real change in the retail landscape.

Method products took home the honours, with their cleaner ingredients, recycled packaging, B-Corporation status and LEED Platinum factory.

LD-sustainability-Method

We shared the LD event trailer with the Method folks, and got to watch the video featuring their new ‘Soap Box’ facility, recently built in South Chicago.

Of course, this won’t be our last sustainability award, so we hope our Green Deal shoppers, vendors and partners continue to weigh in on the stories and priorities that matter most to them.

Congratulations, Method! You are the REAL Green Deal!
