Made from Milk Jugs! Play a Little Greener This Summer with Green Toys

Looking for some more sustainable toys that can also teach the little ones a thing or two about recycling? Take a look at the Green Toys line. Made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic, these great looking vehicles are bright, durable and perfect for the beach or playground.

Green Toys ScooperThe toys are made from recycled milk jugs (#5 PP plastic) and packaged in recycled (and recyclable) cardboard cartons printed with soy inks. They also contain no glues, screws or paint.

According to their website, every pound of recycled milk jugs used to create a Green Toys product saves enough energy to power 3,000 AAA batteries, a TV for 3 weeks or a laptop computer for a whole month.

The Recycling Truck is the star of their video, but the line also includes the Dumper, Scooper, Tug Boat and Helicopter.

So grab some Green Toys and head for the sandbox. And don’t forget to recycle your milk jug!

London Drugs Gibsons celebrates Green Living at the 2016 Gibsons Home & Garden Expo

London Drugs Gibson Home Show Pano

– By Chris Odgaard, Manager, London Drugs Gibsons

On Saturday, June 18th the LD Gibsons team attended the 2016 Gibsons Home and Garden Expo at the Gibsons Community Centre. The theme for this year’s show was ‘Sustainable Living, Green Future’ so it was a great opportunity to showcase our What’s the Green Deal sustainability program.

Kirsten from Webber Natirals

Kristin from Webber Naturals was a hit!

We themed our booth, ‘Better Choices for Better Living’. This allowed us to touch on the many better consumer offerings we highlight in our stores with the Green Deal signage.  We also brought along Kristin, a nutritionist from Webber Naturals, to help us talk about some of our health-related products and services.

The show was PACKED and we spoke to a lot of people about our Green Deal programs and products. It was a good opportunity to get feedback directly from customers, and response was extremely positive. Kristin, our Webber Nutritionist was extremely popular at the event and told us that this was the first event she had ever attended where she actually ran out of ballots for her gift basket draw!

We had other vendors support us with handouts and educational materials as well. Thanks to Tri-Mor/Hamilton Beach, Tree of Life for the Nakd Bars, Jamieson for the Gift Basket and Vega for the samples and literature.

Thanks also to Cathy Kovacs (Assistant Store Manager) and MariAnn Ostrosky (Supervisor) for planning and participating in the event, as well as Maury McCausland (Sustainability Coordinator), Lorne Craig (our Green Deal blogger), and Shelley Engelhardt (Marketing) for their help.

Based on our experience, we will definitely look at doing this again next year.

Many customers were surprised to learn about our many greener choice products.

YOU can help stop FOOD WASTE! Here are 5 things we can all do!

Canadians waste $31 billion in food each year.* When that food decomposes in a landfill, it creates methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses. So our environment pays the ultimate price. It’s up to us all to do what we can to make food waste history.

Where food waste comes from:*

  • Consumers – 47%
  • Retail – 10%
  • On Farm – 10%
  • Processing, Transport & Distribution – 24%
  • Restaurants & Hotels – 9%

What YOU can do:

1. Compost your Food Scraps Vancouver treats food waste as “a resource,” says Carrie Hightower, a technical adviser in Metro Vancouver’s zero-waste implementation program, sending it to commercial composters like Harvest Power where an anaerobic digester converts organic waste into green energy.

2. Switch to smaller dishes and portions  The standard plate is up to 36% larger than it was 50 years ago!*** So while 6 oz of pasta on an 8” plate looks reasonable, the same 6 oz on a 12” plate may look more like an appetizer.

3. Give uneaten Food a second chance Put that old banana in a smoothie. Make vegetable soups, or try your hand at freezing & home canning!

4. Never waste water-intensive foods such as meat Throw away that burger and you’re wasting more than just food. Producing 1 kg of animal protein requires about 100 times more water than producing 1 kg of grain protein!**

5. Try the FoodKeeper App to help keep track of expiry dates This handy little app gives you information on food storage times, helping organize your meals to make the best of food you have.

What is London Drugs doing about Food Waste?

Every store has a program in place, with connections to multiple organizations across Western Canada.
In small rural communities or single markets we work with local charities, food banks or churches. If that’s not an option, items are returned to our distribution centre and forwarded to one of our larger partners.

In BC we partner with Quest Food Exchange, whose goal is ‘reducing hunger with dignity’. Unusable items are put into an organics recycling program.

In Alberta we partner with the Alberta Food Bank in Edmonton and Calgary. These fine groups also provide education and support, like nutritional seminars and kitchen classes.

More towns & cities are creating infrastructure for organics recycling. We are happy to share our knowledge and learning with any organizations or agencies involved in reducing food waste.

In the first quarter of 2016, we diverted or gave out over 72 Tons of food!

This June, join us to learn more about green tech at the HP Partner for the Planet Workshops. And don’t forget your recycling!

HP-planet-montage

No one can be sustainable all on their own – making a difference takes partnership. And we are proud to partner with HP – a true leader in technology design and recycling – for some great in-store events in the London Drugs computer department. Workshops run from June 4 – 28, 2016

When it comes to printer cartridges, few tech manufacturers match HP’s dedication to sustainability:

  • HP includes recycled plastic in products and designs up front for recyclability.
  • HP offers free take-back and recycling of printer cartridges in more than 50 countries worldwide.
  • In one year, HP has used more than 15 million lbs of recycled plastic as raw material for the manufacture of cartridges.
  • Since 1997 more than 210 million cartridges have been returned to HP for recycling.
  • 3.3 billion plastic bottles and 50 million plastic apparel hangers kept out of landfill through HP’s Canadian formulated closed loop recycling process.
  • Recycled plastic contained in HP cartridges has a 30% smaller carbon footprint than new plastic used in cartridges.
  • See how your printer’s carbon footprint compares! Try the HP Carbon Footprint Calculator.

Ever wonder how a printer cartridge gets recycled? See behind the green scenes in this HP video.

Through their Planet Partners initiative, HP offers free cartridge return and recycling in over 50 countries worldwide. Cartridges are sent to regional HP Planet Partners plants, sorted and prepared for recycling. This can involve shredding or disassembly – a new innovation for HP. Labels, lids, foam, metal and plastic bodies are separated. Metals can be smelted and reused and plastics become raw material for new cartridges.

If you have HP cartridges, that’s great. But remember, London Drugs takes back all cartridge brands, as well as printers, computers, TVs, DVD and VHS players, batteries and more.

What’s REALLY different about Burt’s Bees lipstick? You’ll have to pick one up to find out.

Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 4.01.30 PM

The iconically green Burt’s Bees brand has been making natural personal care products since they launched their original beeswax lip balm in 1991. Now Burt’s is creating buzz with a new line of lipsticks, formulated and packaged with the same focus on sustainability that has made the brand a green household name. It offers 8-hour moisture, vibrant colour in 14 shades and is made with 100% naturally moisturizing ingredients like moringa and raspberry seed oils.

But that’s not the most interesting difference.

Tulip_Tide_380What you’ll find when you pick up a Burt’s Bees lipstick is that it feels lighter than a traditional lipstick tube. That’s because most lipstick containers are WEIGHTED to give them more heft.

By dropping the weight, Burt’s Bees was able to make their packaging completely recyclable (#5 polypropylene) and the container is even made with 60% post-consumer-waste recycled content.

So not only will your lips feel (and look) naturally great, you can reduce your packaging footprint at the same time. And that’s got to put a smile on your face.

Shop for Burts Bees lipsticks here, and remember, when it’s time to recycle the tube, you can Bring Back the Pack from any purchase you make at London Drugs.

If you are curious to learn more about bees and sustainability, have a look at the Burt’s website. Their collaboration with the Pollinator Partnership began at the onset of Colony Collapse Disorder in 2007, creating the Honeybee Health Improvement Project. It awards annual research grants to scientists seeking solutions to improve honeybee health.

Burt’s Bees also managed to maintain their green standards when, in 2007, the company was purchased by Clorox. (They send zero waste to landfill, turning waste products into biomass-based fuel. electricity and even cement)

Burt’s Bees culture has even been credited with bringing a wider sustainability mandate to Clorox, and they represent a great example of a company and product line that we are proud to highlight in our Green Deal program.

London Drugs Prince George Cleans Up Again With Spring Recycling Round-Up

Christian Schenk, Store Manager at London Drugs, Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall

Christian Schenk, Store Manager at London Drugs, Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall

It’s springtime, and that means getting rid of clutter. Once again, London Drugs helped citizens of Prince George avoid cluttering landfills at the same time, with a recycling drop-off event featuring some very green partners.

Saturday April 16th, The London Drugs parking lot was host to Tire Stewardship BC, Kidseat Recyclers and the Recycling & Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS). Polaris Montessori Elementary School students helped customers with free recycling of their tires, while old car seats could be dropped off for a recycling fee of $10.

Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall and Councillor Garth Frizzell also dropped by to lend a hand and add their support. Mayor Hall was quoted in a News 250 article on the event; “We’re striving to become a green community and environmentally this is a huge thing for us to undertake.”

LD-recycling-event1-PG-2016The London Drugs store team was also on hand to remind people of all the recyclables they can bring back to the store ANY day of the year.

“We had an opportunity to tell customers about the various programs we offer; Bring Back The Pack, battery recycling, electronics recycling, etc,” says Christian Schenk, store manager at London Drugs. “I had an opportunity to talk with the mayor and let him know about what we are doing to take care of the “footprint” that we create. He was quite impressed and even commented that he wished other larger businesses would do the same.”

Way to go, P.G. You are the REAL Green Deal!

From your junk drawer to Zero Waste, our Green Deal sustainability story has it all!

London Drugs Green Deal Sustainability Overview Earth Month 2016

Once upon a time…

There was a lonely flip phone. One of millions of discarded recyclables looking for a better place to call home. Fortunately, London Drugs was launching a program to make recycling as easy as a trip to the store.  The year was 2008 Here’s our story.

The London Drugs philosophy is to support the communities we serve. Years before 2008, our stores had offered recycling, our photo labs treated their water and our operations reduced their impacts. But it was time to take our sustainability journey further.
What’sthe Green Deal? began as a question, because we always want to seek better sustainability answers.

Our 4 Pillar Strategy:

1. WASTE REDUCTION – Over 93% Of all store waste is diverted from landfill by our employees.

2. ENERGY & OPERATIONS – Better warehouse design & lighting, biodiesel in our trucks and more.

3. UPSTREAM BUYING – Our  Responsible Purchasing Policy helps show vendors exactly what we expect when it comes to their supply chain standards.

4. EDUCATION & COMMUNICATION – Our outreach events, sponsorships, Twitter feed @WTGreenDeal and our greendeal.ca website & blog help share greener living tips with the whole community.

What can customers recycle at London Drugs?

  • Electronics
  • Small Appliances
  • Packaging from our products including Styrofoam
  • Plastic Bags
  • Insurance Plastic Folders
  • Alkaline Batteries
  • Cell Phones
  • Rechargeable Batteries
  • Compact Fluorescent Bulbs & Fluorescent Light Tubes (up to 48”)
  • Disposable Cameras
  • Ink jet Cartridges
  • Laser Cartridges
  • Metal Film Canisters

WHERE does our recycling go?

  • Global Electric Electronic
Processing (GEEP)
  • e-Cycle
  • FOAM ONLY
  • Cascades Recovery
  • Call2Recycle
  • Light Recycle
  • Various Recycling Partners

Responsible Recycling

Our recycling partners are certified and reviewed to ensure no unprocessed material is sent to substandard offshore facilities
London Drugs will take back all of your packaging from our products.
Including the Styrofoam!

Don’t dump drugs!
Our pharmacists take back all unused or expired medications, so they don’t pollute lands and waters.

Thanks to our customers and employees, our average yearly recycling totals over 11 MILLION lbs !

For those who like to shop a little greener… We identify Green Deal products with environmental benefits at the shelf and online.

The Zero Waste QUESTION – Can we create NEW products from  the ‘waste’  material streams that come from our recycling?

We already have one closed-loop product on our shelves. Cascades recycled paper products are made from cardboard and paper partially sourced from our waste recycling streams. And we’re still looking for even more ways to get to Zero Waste.

As GLOBE 2016 moved the world toward a more sustainable future, London Drugs was there.

https://youtu.be/2-ZlVpXIUMk

Participating in the GLOBE 2016 Leadership Summit, March 2,3,4, was inspiring, reassuring and motivating.

The London Drugs What’s the Green Deal team was inspired by Prime Minister Trudeau and our Premiers, reaffirming a commitment to policy and business that will help lead Canada to the low-carbon economy of the future.

We were inspired by the many clean-tech innovations on display at the Innovation Expo.

We were reassured that London Drugs and What’s the Green Deal are on the right track with our sustainabilty and waste reduction work. Through the business cases of Interface, Unilever, Seventh Generation, Philips Lighting and other brands, we learned more about supply-chain transparency and sustainability on a global scale.

And we were motivated to take our What’s the Green Deal program even further – to every London Drugs customer and employee in every market, sharing best practices, products, recycling efforts and reducing our impacts in the communities we are so proud to serve.

As Prime Minister Trudeau said, “The business of building clean economies has gone mainstream.” We will be using this momentum from GLOBE 2016 to take our sustainability goals and practices even further.
